Marymount College alumni have reached success in many fields including teaching, law, business, and international relations. Former students are professors and business leaders while others work in medicine, government and in the non-profit arena for companies such as the California Heart & Vascular Institute, the Department of Homeland Security and Bishop Amat Memorial High School.
You Choose Your Area of Interest
During the first two years of your college experience you will build a well-rounded educational foundation that will prepare you for your upper division learning. In your junior year, you will combine two areas of emphasis from the following options.
American Studies
This area of study provides an interdisciplinary focus on United States history and culture. Choice of courses includes US History; Race, Ethnicity and Gender; Religion in America; Music in America; American Novel; Business, Government and Society; American Philosophy; and Food in America.
Arts & Media
This area of study provides an exposure to Media Studies with a mix of theory and studio classes such as Art History, Drawing, Design, Digital Media, Music, Film and Theater.
Behavioral Sciences (15 units- 3 upper division)
This emphasis is only available for Biomedical Sciences students.
This emphasis is the study of human behavior for preparation for the MCAT exam and preparation for graduate pre-professional programs in the medical field. The emphasis includes a variety of courses in Psychology, Psychobiology and Sociology.
Biomedical Science
This pre-professional emphasis provides students with a strong background in life sciences and physical sciences. It is intended to serve as preparation for graduate study in medical programs and related health fields.
Business
A strong emphasis is placed on fundamental concepts in this area of study. Accounting, Economics and a flexible choice of upper division business courses complement the Business emphasis. Choices include Marketing; Entrepreneurship; Management for Sustainability; Communication and Leadership; The Art of Negotiation; California in the Global Economy; and Corporate Finance.
Criminal Justice (24 units – 12 upper division)
Students study and research issues and problems related to Criminal Justice with a view to developing the ethical framework for a life of compassionate service to others and society within this wide-ranging field.
Global Studies
Global Studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to the development of awareness and understanding of global issues including courses in Cultural Geography; Perspectives on Global Development; World Religions; Religion, Peace and War; Folk Roots and World Music; California in the Global Economy; and The Thirsty Planet.
Music (24 units – at least 4 upper division)
The Music emphasis offers students a broad spectrum of academic opportunities in music. Courses are offered in performance, theory, composition, history, ethnomusicology, recording arts, and music business.
Performing Arts (24 units – at least 3 upper division)
The Performing Arts emphasis provides study in dance, music, and theater. Emphasis is on students’ consideration and development of their own personal aesthetic values within an historical and eclectic framework.
Psychology– This area of emphasis provides a foundation in the study of human behavior. Courses include General Psychology; Research Methods; Social Psychology; Psychobiology; Child and Adolescent Development; Organizational Behavior; and Intercultural Psychology.
The Capstone Project
Your senior year will include work on your interdisciplinary Capstone Project and the completion of your coursework in your areas of emphasis. Your Capstone Project, with the guidance of a faculty mentor, will include research, writing and verbal presentation that is related to your area of academic emphasis. It is a significant project that demonstrates a student’s comprehension of a specific interest.

Your classes will be small in size which will allow you to fully participate in learning, including case study presentations, discussion, and reflection on what you’ve learned. A student seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts can expect to complete their degree with:
- The ability to utilize the vocabulary and thought patterns of at least two different academic disciplines
- The understanding of analytic methodology by applying at least two disciplines to an issue
- The capability to select the most appropriate disciplinary approaches to the understanding of an issue
- The aptitude to recognize and analyze the ethical implications of a given issue, and, where appropriate, articulate a personal position
- Active engagement in collaborative study of an issue with representatives of various disciplines
- Participation in experiential learning using collaborative skills for personal, social, civic and global responsibility.
