Marymount California University offers a rotation of honors classes in different disciplines. These classes are denoted by an ‘H’ in the schedule of classes, and are open to students with a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Students in honors courses can expect a stimulating blend of participation, discussion, reading, research and presentation. Successful completion of three honors courses is particularly noted at graduation.
Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Program
Marymount also hosts the Alpha Omega Kappa chapter of the national Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honors society, providing opportunities for service, leadership and recognition for freshman and sophomore students. PTK membership requires a GPA of 3.3 or higher in college-level classes, is by application, and is coordinated through the office of Service Learning. PTK students are recognized at an induction ceremony and at graduation. They also have access to “College Fish,” a comprehensive website for a myriad of scholarship opportunities.
Delta Epsilon Sigma
With the implementation of our baccalaureate program, Marymount has organized a group of upperclassmen to charter membership in Delta Epsilon Sigma (DES). Delta Epsilon Sigma is a national scholastic honor society for students, faculty and alumni of colleges and universities with a Catholic tradition. It was founded in 1939 to recognize academic accomplishments, to foster scholarly activities and to encourage a sense of intellectual community among its members. DES requires that members to have completed at least 60 units of college level coursework for their baccalaureate degrees and maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.
DES students are recognized at an Induction ceremony and at Graduation.
Students who are formally enrolled in the Honors Program will have access to “College Fish,” a comprehensive website listing a myriad of select scholarship opportunities.
Honors at Graduation
All honors students receive designation of honors course enrollment on their transcripts. In addition, students who take at least three honors courses and earn an average of a 3.3 in both their honors courses and in their overall GPA will receive special medallion at the graduation ceremony.
Students with exemplary GPAs will be listed in the graduation brochure with a notation of graduating with:
Distinction with a GPA of 3.3-3.69,
High Distinction with a GPA of 3.7-3.89 and
Highest Distinction with a GPA of 3.9-4.0
