College Raises Money for Scholarship
Success By The Sea was the theme for the 2012 Marymount College gala that raised funds for student scholarships. Nearly 275 people attended the event that paid tribute to three outstanding community leaders. Honored at the biennial event was DeDe Hicks, CEO of the Volunteer Center of the South Bay, Harbor and Long Beach; Liz Schindler Johnson, the executive director of the Grand Vision Foundation ; and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Marymount College Burt Arnold.
In the 2011-12 academic year nearly 70 percent of Marymount students required tuition assistance to remain at the college, totaling more than $14.4 million in financial aid. Reaching out to students from urban Los Angeles neighborhoods, the college engaged itself in programs with the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor, Project Grad Los Angeles, the Post of Los Angeles High School, Verbum Dei High School and the Fulfillment Fund to recruit and serve urban students. Many of these students are the first in their families to have the opportunity to attend college.
