Our Mission Statement
The Marymount College Library provides resources and services to support the curricular and personal information needs of the College community. The Library's role is first and foremost an educational one, teaching community members to find, evaluate, select and use information efficiently and effectively.
What We Value
We value our role as information professionals and our responsibility to provide the College community with open access to all kinds of information, free from censorship. We value a collection that reflects all facets of knowledge, including contemporary and controversial issues, which neither promotes nor suppresses particular ideas or beliefs. We value our customers' right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought and resources consulted or borrowed. We value the diversity of our College community and strive to create an open and supportive environment for learning. We treat our customers with respect and sensitivity. We value high-quality customer service. We value outreach and strive to proactively meet the needs of our customers. We value teamwork and a collegial atmosphere in which everyone has a chance to develop professionally. We value our co-workers and treat them with respect, fairness and good faith. Library Program Goals
• Develop a campus-wide information literacy program based on respectful partnerships with faculty and staff.
• Offer a reference service tailored to the unique needs of individuals.
• Develop and maintain a collection that is up-to-date, easily accessible and meets the needs of the College community.
• Provide a welcoming environment and sufficient space and technology for community members to meet, study and reflect.
• Develop students' understanding of and respect for the role of libraries and librarians.
• Develop community members' awareness of ethical issues related to information and technology use.
Expected Student Learning Outcomes
Cognitive
Students will know:
• the resources and services libraries offer.
• library resources are increasingly electronic in nature and available outside libraries' physical facilities.
• the role of librarians is to provide assistance with information seeking and the use of information resources.
Behavioral
Students will be able to:
• navigate a library website in order to identify core services and information resources.
• find the record for a book in an online catalog and then locate the book on the shelf.
• use an index to locate articles on a topic.
• locate the full-text of an article using a citation.
• evaluate a website.
• differentiate between articles from magazines, journals and newspapers.
• use MLA Style to cite a book, article and website.
