When does $25,000= $100,000? When Debra L. Reed makes a donation that is matched by two companies and the total gift reaches that generous sum.
Reed is chairman of the board and CEO of Sempra Energy and has been one of Fortune magazine’s “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” for several years.
When she decided to create an endowment at Marymount California University for $25,000, Sempra matched it 1:1 and Halliburton, where she serves on the board of directors, matched that $50,000 2:1.
“I am pleased that Halliburton and Sempra Energy have joined with me in this worthwhile endeavor,” said Reed. “Together, we are creating a substantial scholarship to help promising young women benefit from an excellent education – hopefully, the first step forward in their successful careers.”
Reed’s endowment was established this fall as a result of several harmonic convergences. Reed was mentored by Marymount trustee Richard Farman, a retired CEO who worked with her at Southern California Gas and Sempra Energy; like many MCU students, she was the first in her family to go to college; and she liked the fact that she could direct her donation toward an area where she has a passion: women math or science majors who are first generation college students.
“As the first in my family to attend college, I recognize the critical role that my education has played in my success,” said Reed. “I want to help other young women have the same opportunities I did, while also encouraging them to embrace math and science.”
“We are delighted that Ms. Reed has chosen to invest in our students and look forward to awarding $5,000 annually in perpetuity to worthy students because of this generous donation,” said Marymount President Michael Brophy. “Being the president at Marymount has allowed me to witness the hard work and dedication of our students. Ms. Reed’s success and generosity will continue to encourage our students. We appreciate Ms. Reed and look forward to this gift inspiring others to give to Marymount.”
An estimated 65 percent of Fortune 500 companies match employee donations. If you would like to make a donation to MCU, obtain a matching-gift form from your HR office, fill it out, and include it with your contribution. The MCU Development Office at 30800 Palos Verdes Dr. East, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275-6299 will handle the details.
