If you or your dependents will be traveling outside the U.S. during your F-1 (including any periods of practical training) program, you need to obtain a travel signature from the coordinator of International Student Programs before leaving the U.S. You must meet all eligibility criteria to be granted a travel signature. A travel signature is valid for one year from the date it was signed. If you are on approved Optional Practical Training (OPT), each travel signature is valid for six months.Helpful Tip: When traveling within the U.S. by air, sea or land, always carry your passport and I-20 with you. You may accidentally drive across the border to Mexico or Canada, and need your documents to re-enter. Also, airlines reserve the right to question you about your immigration status, and representatives may request to see your immigration documents. To avoid delays or other issues, it's always best to bring your immigration documents with you.
The F1 student’s temporary departure from the U.S. will be reported to immigration, and his or her SEVIS record will be closed out to reflect an authorized absence. To re-enter the U.S. as an F1 student, contact the coordinator of International Student Programs at least 45 before the start of the semester in which you intend to resume studies at Marymount California University.
Students who travel outside the U.S. for more than five months: This is NOT considered a temporary leave for immigration purposes. The coordinator of International Student Programs will have to issue a new, Initial Attendance I-20 (new SEVIS Record) with a new program start date. Time accrued as an F1 student from your previous SEVIS record will be lost. Once an Initial Attendance I-20 is issued, your F1 “clock” starts over, and you must meet the one academic year requirement to be eligible for any F1 benefits (i.e., OPT/CPT). For I-20 issuance, please submit a Confidential Statement of Financial Support or bank statement for review. Financial documents must be dated within the past nine months.
